The Knight and the Lion

"Yvain Trapped"

So there was Yvain, shut in between these two gates, in a kind of hall-way, with a golden ceiling and brightly painted walls, not knowing what to do. All at once a door opened from a small room to the side and a young girl stepped out, closing the door behind her. The girl was alone, and when she saw Yvain she cried out:

'Surely, Knight, you've picked a bad time to arrive. If anyone sees you, you will be cut to pieces. For the lord of this castle is dying of his wound and I know full well that it is you who have killed him. My lady and all her people are crying so much that they are like to die of grief, but they know that you must be trapped within the castle and any moment now they will come looking for you and will hack you to pieces in their rage.'

Yvain replied: 'If God pleases, I shall not be killed or taken captive either.'

'I see you are a brave man', the girl said, 'and not afraid in this great danger. Besides, I think I know you. Are you not Yvain, King Urien's son?'

Yvain said that he was.

'My name is Lunette. Do you remember me? I went once to King Arthur's court on an errand for my mistress, the lady of this castle. I was a stranger and did not know my way about or the customs of the court. The other knights there ignored me and did not help me - but you were polite and friendly, showing me where to go and how to deliver my message to the king.

Now I will repay you for your courtesy by helping you. But we must be quick while they are still too busy with their weeping to search for you.

Take this ring and put it on your finger. Now twist it so that the stone is inside the palm of your hand. When you wear it like this you are invisible. It works like the bark of a tree which covers the wood so it cannot be seen. No-one, however sharp his eyes may be, can spot you, any more than the wood of a tree can be seen beneath the outside bark.'

All this pleased Yvain a great deal. Lunette guessed that he must be hungry too, and took him into the small room and sat him upon a couch covered with a richly embroidered cloth. She disappeared, but soon returned carrying a roast chicken, a cake, a tablecloth and a jug of wine, with an elegant silver goblet to drink from. Yvain thanked her and willingly ate the food.
