'Architecture, Senses and Emotion: Eadmer's Canterbury' with Dr Katherine Weikert (University of Winchester)

Eadmer of Canterbury (d. c. 1126) is mostly known for writing history and hagiography, including his influential Life of Saint Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury. But his deep connection to Christ Church Priory at Canterbury Cathedral is displayed throughout these works. This paper explores how architecture and place were deeply influential to Eadmer, from the trauma of the 1067 fire which destroyed the priory, to the sensory experience of the priory’s ancient relics.

Dr. Katherine Weikert is Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester and specialises England and Normandy 900-1200. Her monograph Authority, Space and Gender in the Norman Conquest Era, c. 900-1200 was published in 2020 and has been nominated for the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain's annual book award.

This event will held online via MS Teams. Please email Karl Kinsella, karl.kinsella@abdn.ac.uk if you would like to attend, and the link will be forwarded to you.
