Tommaso Salini: From Commissions to Conundrums; Dr Aaron Thom (History of Art, Aberdeen)
Tommaso Salini, known as ‘Mao’, is best remembered for his bond with the biographer Baglione, as well as being one of Caravaggio’s arch enemies, rather than for his paintings. One of the most idiosyncratic figures from the Caravaggesque coterie, only a few definite works by him survive and the rest are hinged together by a series of attributions. Documented paintings and putative canvases will be examined in this talk that will shed some light on this innovative artist.
