The School of Divinity, History and Philosophy is pleased to announce that Professor Joachim Schaper (Established Chair of Hebrew and Semitic Languages) has been elected to serve as President of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) from 2016 to 2019. This appointment was confirmed during the business meeting of the 22nd congress (held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, from 4 to 9 September 2016) of the IOSOT, which is the central and most important organisation of Old Testament scholars in the world. The School is also pleased to announce that Professor Grant Macaskill (Kirby Laing Chair of New Testament Exegesis) has kindly agreed to serve as Congress Secretary for the 23rd congress of the IOSOT.
One of Professor Schaper's main duties will be to host the upcoming 23rd congress of the IOSOT, which will take place at the University of Aberdeen from 4 to 9 August 2019. The triennial congresses of the IOSOT, typically attended by between 400 and 700 scholars from all over the world, showcase the most innovative and original recent contributions to Old Testament scholarship and serve as a snapshot of the 'state of the art' in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible scholarship worldwide.
