Item Description |
Jumbo's Farewell is one example of a piece of music that Skinner publicised extensively in his publications long before it appeared. This image was created by an Edinburgh lithography firm, Hume and Macdonald. This firm, and Taylor and Henderson of Aberdeen, were the two he used most extensively. Jumbo, an African elephant which children rode on at London Zoo, was bought by the American showman Phineas T. Barnum in 1882 for £10,000. Despite British protests, Jumbo was taken to the United States. He died in Ontario, Canada, in 1885, having been struck by a locomotive. |
