During the Summer holidays this year, Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre will be leading a variety of fun outdoor activities for children in the Cruickshank Botanic Gardens, designed to get them to use their senses to learn more about the natural world around them, and have fun at the same time! Please see below for more details...
Children aged 8-12
Interested in learning more about biodiversity in the local area and finding out about ways we can conserve it? Sign up to one of our sessions below! Each session will include a fun, hands on shelter building session at the start. Sessions run on from 2pm – 3.30pm, and we ask that participants meet in the centre promptly at 2pm to register. Please contact us to book a place for your child on biodiversity@abdn.ac.uk
Thursday 21st July: Come along for a minibeast hunt and learn how to make your own bug home from recycled materials.
Thursday 28th July: Try your hand at pond dipping to find out more about the variety of invertebrate life in our pond.
Thursday 4th August: Find out more about the air quality in the gardens by investigating the trees in the arboretum.
Thursday 11th August: Learn how to build your own bird or bat box, and have some fun decorating it! You are welcome to leave your box in the gardens, or take it home with you.
Children aged 3-7
If you are in charge of running a group for children aged 3-7, such as a nursery or group of rainbows or cubs, we will be offering bookable den building sessions in the gardens which will run for an hour. There is the option to add on additional activity, including doing a bee survey or going on a minibeast hunt, for which you will need to allow an additional half an hour.
Maximum group size is 20 children with additional adults to ensure an adequate ratio of adults to children. Regrettably we cannot provide facilities within the building for children to have snack while visiting but there is an area of the gardens allocated for children to have snack. Please contact us on biodiversity@abdn.ac.uk to discuss your requirements and book a suitable date for your group to visit.
There is no charge for any these sessions but places are limited and come on a first come first served basis with priority being given to children from our local areas.
