Whats the Problem with Plastics?
The Aberdeen University Students’ Association are exploring an interesting solution to the ‘problem with plastics’ during the upcoming Climate Week. In collaboration with Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre they are organising a workshop to make biodegradable plastic from vegetable starch. The workshop is open to students and includes a discussion about some of the possible solutions to plastic.
Marie Fish, Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre Manager, is delivering the workshop and says “We will be highlighting the polluting effects of petroleum based plastic packaging, and how these impact on the natural world, whilst also providing an opportunity to consider compostable alternatives that are already available.”
Emily Murphy, University Waste Manager says “this event is important because it will spark a discussion on the need for oil based plastic and will consider compostable alternatives that can be relatively easy to make.”
The Climate Week programme is organised by the Sustainable Futures team at the Aberdeen University Students’ Association. Sarah Turner is leading on the programme and says “Climate Week is a really great opportunity to get thinking about our impact on the environment, and how small changes that we make in our everyday lives can reduce our carbon footprint. From making biodegradable plastic, to learning to appreciate the botanical gardens or even enjoying a bicycle powered film screening, there is something for everyone to get involved in.”
