The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Annual Science Conference took place 15-19 September 2014 at the Palexco Congress and Exhibition Centre, A Coruña, Spain. There were awards for awards for excellent oral and poster presentations.
A former PhD student Paris Vasilakopoulos, now at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research in Greece, received the Best Presentation Award for his study on quantifying ecological resilience in shifting complex natural systems: an application on Barents Sea cod. This talk was based on a chapter of his PhD thesis. You can read the ICES press release.
Fiona McIntyre, currently a PhD student with Paul Fernandes, got an honourable mention in the Early Career Scientist category for her poster presentation: Where’s Lophelia? A benign technique for mapping coral distribution in the closed areas of the Rockall Plateau
Their research very much maintains our reputation for student excellence in marine sciences. Our PhD student, Margarita Machairopoulou, won the best presentation by an Early Career Scientist at the ICES ASC last year.
