For our next informal seminar, PhD student Sean Graham, will be giving an informal seminar on "Barley genotypes and the rhizosheath" this Friday 31st May at 1 pm in Room G27, Cruickshank building.

Sean Graham is a first year PGR in the School of Biological Sciences working at the root - soil interface. As a member of Prof. Paul Hallett's Soil Physics and Dr. Ashish Malik (University of Edinburgh) Microbial Biogeochemistry lab, his research aims to investigate the root-soil interactions of modern and old "landrace" barley using microscale physics and microbiological approaches.

Synopsis:

Commercial barley breeding is a long and expensive process spanning 5-10 year using traditional methods. Despite an increasing body of research highlighting the importance of breeding below ground traits, there are significant barriers that need to be overcome to make this economically viable. In this presentation, I will introduce the importance of spring barley for Scotland and plant selection , then overview the research of an understudied and exciting root-soil interface trait called the Rhizosheath.
