Developing Environmental DNA Informal Seminar: Surveillance for New Zealand Flatworm, Arthurdendyus triangulatus

For our next informal seminar, PhD student Stewart Rosell will be giving an online informal seminar on Developing Environmental DNA Surveillance for New Zealand Flatworm, Arthurdendyus triangulatus" next Friday 1st March at 1 pm on Microsoft Teams only (see link below).

Synopsis

Environmental DNA (eDNA) can detect terrestrial invertebrate species. This could be more efficient than using visual inspection methods which are currently used for biosecurity and have other practical advantages over current biosecurity inspection methods.

I will present about my research developing eDNA based methods for detecting non-native flatworms using Arthurdendyus triangulatus, which is widespread in Scotland and Ireland, for proof-of-concept experiments. These methods could be adapted to target any of the 22 non-native land flatworm species in Europe, which often evade detection by current inspection methods and are difficult to control. These methods could also be adapted for other non-native invertebrates spread in horticulture.
