Stock structure of Atlantic cod in a warming climate: investigating the connectivity between cod populations in the Celtic Seas
For our next informal seminar, PhD student Jonathan Ellis will be giving an informal seminar on “Stock structure of Atlantic cod in a warming climate: investigating the connectivity between cod populations in the Celtic Seas to inform fisheries management"
Synopsis:
I will be talking about my investigation into the stock structure of cod in and around the Irish Sea using population distributions from trawl surveys, otolith microchemistry, and data storage tagging. Many Atlantic cod populations in the Northeast Atlantic have been in decline since the stock collapses in the 1980s and 1990s. Southern cod stocks, particularly those in the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea, are at the warming edge of the species’ distribution and are at most risk of local extinction as temperatures rise. Recent tagging evidence has shown movements of cod from the Irish Sea to the Celtic Sea which has prompted further research into their population structures to inform fisheries management. This project aims to develop a better understanding of cod population structure around the Irish Sea using population distributions from surveys, otolith microchemistry, and data storage tags. In this talk I will focus on completed work on cod population distributions with a discussion of preliminary results from data storage tags and otolith microchemistry.
We look forward to seeing you there!
