For our next informal seminar, Dr Anneli Lofstedt, will be giving an informal seminar on "Mapping UK seafood supply chains" next Friday 27 October at 1 pm in Cruickshank Room G27.

Synopsis:

Transforming our diets to build a more sustainable food system is paramount to achieving net zero. Arguably, such diets will include more seafood. We mapped seafood production (capture and aquaculture), trade (imports and exports), purchases (within and out-of-home), and seafood consumption, to species level, between 2009 and 2018, for the UK. Mapping dietary nutrient flows revealed that the UK undergoes large nutrient losses through exports. Furthermore, the European recommendation for omega-3 fatty acid intake could be fully achieved by consuming a quarter of a portion of mackerel or less than a quarter of a portion of herring, per person per week.
