Evaluating the performance of tropical avoided deforestation projects using remote sensing technologies and ways forward
For our next informal seminar, Prof. David Coomes from the University of Cambridge, hosted by Dr David Burslem, will give a talk on "Evaluating the performance of tropical avoided deforestation projects using remote sensing technologies and ways forward" in Cruickshank G27 this Friday at 1 pm (Forest Ecology and Conservation Group – Changing the Landscape of Conservation (coomeslab.org)).Synopsis:
Using international carbon markets to reduce tropical forest deforestation and degradation was heralded as a win for climate change mitigation, a win for biodiversity and a win for local livelihoods in the early 2000s. Two decades on, the conversation is decidedly less optimistic. My talk will focus on evaluating the performance of tropical avoided deforestation projects using remote sensing technologies and discussing possible ways forward.
Dr David Burslem will also talk about the work they about to start in the Cairngorms under a NERC funded programme. We will conduct a lidar survey of 400 km² of the national park this summer. We are looking for collaborators in Scottish universities who are interested in using the 3-D structural information that lidar provides to inform their work on carbon monitoring, biodiversity, hydrology and other applications.
We look forward to seeing you there!
