Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS)

These instruments can be used to quantitate known metabolites of interest or identify unknowns in a sample matrix. They can also be used in a range of metabolic studies via determination of the stable isotopic enrichment of compounds of biological interest.

The section is equipped with:

  • Thermo TSQ 9000 GC-MS/MS instrument with both electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (PCI and NCI) capabilities. It is coupled to a TriPlus RSH autosampler and has headspace and SPME arrow technologies for analysis of volatile compounds.
  • Thermo TSQ 7000 GC-MS instrument operates in electron impact (EI) mode.

It supports research in:

  • Quantitative analysis e.g. amino acids in plasma or food extracts
  • Principle component analysis
  • Structural analysis – identification of unknowns
  • Protein Metabolism
  • Glucose kinetics

Recent studies have included work on:

  • Type 2 diabetes prevention and maintenance
  • Sustainable fish smoking techniques
  • Sustainable proteins
  • Oral Cancer research
