Regulation of skeletal muscle metabolism by physical activity

Jon Smith is a final year PhD student at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

Regulation of skeletal muscle metabolism by physical activity.

Sedentary behaviour is a known risk factor for metabolic disease. Alternatively, physical activity promotes metabolic health across the life span. Skeletal muscle is central to many of the benefits associated with physical activity and my PhD studies have primarily focused on the impact of inactivity and exercise on skeletal muscle metabolism.

Under free-living conditions, we investigated the efficacy of activity ‘snacks’ to improve glucose tolerance and blood glucose control in people with obesity. We also reported distinct inflammatory responses in skeletal muscle of individuals with type 2 diabetes after an acute bout of exercise and identified an exercise-responsive cytokine that may facilitate cell-to-cell communication important for skeletal muscle adaptation. Lastly, using a meta-analysis approach we interrogated the skeletal muscle transcriptome after exercise and inactivity and further characterised the impact of exercise-responsive transcription factors on skeletal muscle metabolism and morphology.

Overall, our research supports the importance of physical activity to maintain skeletal muscle metabolic health and function, while highlighting the role of select molecules and transcription factors in these processes.
