Long Service Awards

In February 2020 five staff at the Rowett received Long Service Awards for 25 and 40 years of service.

Professor Alex Johnstone - 25 years service

International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the contribution and achievements women involved in science. One of the challenges of being a woman working in scientific research is to achieve the balance of being a full-time working Mum! Being part of the Rowett team has provided a framework for me to achieve this. I celebrate 25 years at the Rowett and look forward to more achievements, with the support from my colleagues.

Celebrating 40 years of service

It must have been an unusual job to keep me interested for 40 years, but I can honestly say, it has never been dull. The evolution of scientific techniques has been incredible since 1979, and I consider myself very lucky to have been a part of that progress first hand. Being a mum aswell was definitely a balancing act, but I don't think either suffered too much from the experience!

A career in science was not what I initially planned, but the training and mentoring I received at the Rowett really inspired me. I have gone on to work in some fascinating areas of science over the years, the speed of change means you must be constantly learning and developing new techniques, it really keeps you on the ball! As well as enjoying the many challenges working in science creates, I have met and worked with some amazing people from all over the world.

Celebrating 40 years of service is an achievement I am proud of. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the varied research carried out by the Rowett. No two days are the same and there have been challenges, but the support of colleagues means there is always a way to move forward with a question or new puzzle. Working in science is a privilege and has involved meeting and working with so many different people from all over the world, it really enriches your life.

At present, less than a third of researchers worldwide are women so on International Women's Day we recognise the contribution of women in science but must ensure that there is equal access for girls in the years to follow.

Having reached my 40 year milestone at the Rowett (where did the time go?) I'd like to thank colleagues past and present for helping to make the journey both enjoyable and memorable.
