In October, RIISS was delighted to welcome emerging scholars in Irish and Scottish Studies to attend a weekend article-writing retreat at the Institute. Dr Lucy Hinnie (British Library/Wikipedia), Dr Lizzie Swarbrick(Edinburgh), Dr Zosia Kuczynska (UCD), Dr Natalie Tal Harries (Aberdeen), Dr Anna Fancett (Aberdeen) and Dr Arianna Introna (Open University) are all previously invited speakers from the Institute’s ‘New Voices in Irish and Scottish Studies’ webinar series. Working alongside student writers from Aberdeen’s PhD programmes, the visiting scholars developed new research articles in preparation for a Special Issue of the Journal of Irish and Scottish Studies. The New Voices alumni also participated in a careers roundtable attended by Postgraduates from across the Humanities at Aberdeen. Commenting on the event, organizer and Institute deputy director Dr Sarah Sharp commented: ‘This has been such a wonderful opportunity to bring together brilliant scholars from across our field, and a really friendly and productive weekend. My hope for the New Voices initiative is that it will build enduring connections between the next generation of researchers In Irish and Scottish Studies’.
