The Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies is inviting early career researchers who are currently working on an Irish and/or Scottish research project in an Arts and Humanities field to apply for up to £1000 of funding to enable a short-term stay in Aberdeen.
This would enable the successful candidate to either:
- Consult holdings in the University’s Special Collections
- Write a research or fellowship grant application to be supported by RIISS.
- Finish a significant (REF-returnable) piece of academic writing.
We encourage proposals that draw upon expertise or research resources specific to Aberdeen and local area, or that develop a project with the intention of seeking funding with RIISS as the host institution. We are also keen to support work that covers currently under-represented areas in the field.
The Visiting Fellow will also have access to a desk within the historic Humanities Manse at King’s College Campus, Aberdeen. It would be expected that the Fellow would participate in the activities of the research institute during their stay, through seminar attendance and workshop participation. The Visiting Fellow might be asked, if their work is at an appropriate stage, to present their project to colleagues in RIISS.
Eligibility:
The 'New Voices' scheme is open to all researchers with a doctorate who meet the UKRI’s definition of Early Career Researcher. We do not ask that you are within a certain number of years of the award of your PhD. However, applicants should be able to demonstrate a research trajectory commensurate to their career stage.
Application Materials:
The applicant is required to submit:
- Short Academic Curriculum vitae (not exceeding 2 pages).
- Brief research proposal (not exceeding 750 words).
The proposal should include reference to any planned outputs from the fellowship, a statement of the proposed research’s place within the applicant’s research trajectory and its contribution to the field. The applicant must also arrange to have a letter of recommendation sent to riiss@abdn.ac.uk
Applications must be received by the closing date of 19 December 2024 for adjudication by a sub-committee including representation from the School of Literature, Languages Music and Visual Culture and the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy and Art History as well as RIISS staff. Applicants will receive notification of the result within one month of the competition closing.
The visit to Aberdeen needs to take place within the second half session of the academic year 2024/25 (February to May).
If you would like to discuss a possible application, please contact Dr Sarah Sharp (sarah.sharp@abdn.ac.uk).
