Professor Andrew Blaikie
Born of farming stock in rural Aberdeenshire, William Alexander rose to become editor of the Aberdeen Free Press, a campaigning Radical Liberal and city worthy. His great value lies in the realist literature he produced in serialised newspaper form, later to emerge as novels, most notably Johnny Gibb of Gushetneuk, a Doric masterpiece of country life and politics surrounding the Disruption. He also penned fiction set in urban Aberdeen and several pieces on local ‘character’ and contemporary social themes. Alexander was a superlative social observer whose rare insight into a lost world provides us today with a precious historical resource.
