We need to find new ways of developing and communicating dietary recommendations, especially in target groups, like those diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The number of people with T2DM is forecast to double within the next 20 years. This group of patients could significantly improve their blood glucose control by better dietary behaviours, and such behaviours could be encouraged and supported by a targeted e-health app.
This project brings together unique expertise on dietary assessment and personalised nutrition from the Rowett Institute, on artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language generation (NLG) from the School of Natural and Computing Sciences, and on diabetes care from NHS Grampian, to start working on the development of a novel and scientifically robust e-health tool/app that monitors what people eat, predicts the glycaemic response based on individualised food intake data, and generates effective language to suggest what people should eat instead.
