University of Aberdeen researchers will feature in an innovative series showcasing the work of Scotland's leading scientists.
Hosted by award-winning climate activist and environmental scientist Laura Young, the podcast features 11 episodes tackling a wide range of topics, from blue carbon and peatlands to flooding, technology, and environmental justice. The series aims to provide accurate scientific information, celebrate Scotland’s contributions to global climate science, and inspire action toward a sustainable future.
Created by the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES), and supported by the Scottish Government's Climate Engagement Fund 2024/2025, the SAGES Climate Science Podcast has now launched.
The University of Aberdeen’s Professor Matteo Spagnolo, glaciologist, and Director of SAGES, will get the series under way in Episode 1 exploring Earth’s climate history, tracing its transformation from ancient times to the present. This episode sets the tone for the series, diving into the evidence behind climate change and what distinguishes today’s crisis from historical shifts, with a strong focus on Scotland.
Later in the series University of Aberdeen’s Dr Will Harcourt will team up with Dr Szabolcs Pap from the University of the Highlands and Islands to discuss the transformative role of AI, digital twins, and biochar technology in addressing environmental challenges and improving water management, in Episode 6.
Episode 8 will include contributions from University of Aberdeen’s PhD student Brady Johnson exploring groundwater, geothermal energy, and the role of Scotland’s geology in creating sustainable energy solutions.
Professor Spagnolo said: “The podcast reflects Scotland's commitment to addressing climate change through collaborative research and public engagement.
“The podcast features an exciting combination of early career and experienced academics, which together present and discuss some of the most striking aspects of climate change and the implications for Scotland. Delivered in both a video and audio format, it is an enjoyable and accessible way to connect listeners with the important work carried out by geoscientists in Scotland’s universities which can make a real difference to some of the biggest climate challenges the world is facing.”
Laura Young, Presenter of the SAGES Climate Science Podcast, said: “Our goal with the SAGES Climate Science Podcast is to cut through the noise of misinformation and bring science to the forefront. Scotland is home to world-leading research and incredible scientists working on solutions to the climate crisis. This podcast connects the public to their work, providing clarity and inspiration at a time when action is more important than ever.”
