Assessment
There will be two formally assessed pieces of course work and a presentation, a minor essay of 2000 words (30% of course grade) and a major essay of 3000-4000 words and a presentation (70% of course grade).

Course attendance will consist of 14 two-hour class meetings held over the two half sessions. Assessment
Students will negotiate individual plans for assessment with the course team. Assessment will entail a product equivalent to approximately 6,000 words of writing in total.

Principles and philosophy of palliative care, malignant and non-malignant palliative care, quality of life and quality of death, pain in palliative care, gastro-intestinal symptoms, respiratory symptoms, neurological/psychiatric symptoms, para-neoplastic syndromes, ethical issues in palliative care, communication issues.

12x 2 hour sessions which will consist of lectures, seminars, group discussions and presentations
Assessment
100% continuous assessment. One short presentation (20%), one 3000 word essay (80%)

Demographics, social theories of ageing, challenging ageism and discrimination, responding to diversity;
Physical ageing and disability;
Principles for working with older people in a health care setting or the community (including quality of life issues, promoting positive culture within organisations);
Promoting person-centred care, maintaining identity and promoting autonomy;
Managing long-term conditions - chronic pain; maximising potential, facilitating independence; participation in leisure activities;
Exploring ways to uphold and promote dignity;
Effective communication/information giving, shared decision-making, older people with sensory losses and stroke;
Nutrition and assisting with eating and drinking, social benefits of food; swallowing problems;
Mental well-being and later life (psychological aspects of ageing, depression, dementia, caring for challenging behaviours);
Sexuality and later life;
Caring for the carers;
Transitions of care - acute to community care - end-of-life care.Structure
12 x 2-hour sessions comprising: lectures, seminars, group discussions and presentations.
A number of 'key note' lectures will be arranged for pertinent topics that cannot be covered in a 12-week course: e.g. poly-pharmacology; promoting continence; spiritually; ethical challenges - such as consent issues.
In addition, students will be encouraged to attend the relevant sessions offered on the palliative care and effective management of people in pain courses.Assessment
1st attempt: Students will be expected to develop a portfolio of learning which will demonstrate their understanding of each of the learning outcomes as applied to their own areas of practice and make recommendations on how this new knowledge may influence practice in the future (5,000 words).
