No formal sessions.

Assessment

1st Attempt: Continuous assessment (100%) summative assessment: first attempt normally three exercises of between 2,500 and 3,500 words, one of which is a feasibility study for their proposed dissertation.

Resit: Continuous assessment (100%); normally three exercises of between 2,500 and 3,500 words, one of which is a feasibility study for their proposed dissertation.

Formative Assessment

Informal feedback, in particular on general expectations at this level for undertaking research, at beginning of course; informative feedback on individual performance via email or other means at occasion of progress discussion.

Feedback

Written feedback, individually discussed, on final submission.

Level 4

EU 4501 - EUROPEAN STUDIES DISSERTATION

Pre-requisites

Available only to Senior Honours candidates in European Studies.

Overview

A dissertation on a topic approved by the Director of European Studies, consisting of a 10,000 to 12,000 word research project related to a topic in European Studies. The project/subject has to be developed and researched, and the dissertation produced, with appropriate data and methodology, placing the clear argument into a wider historiographical framework.

Structure

1 two-hour introductory session, plus 1 two-hour bibliographical search tool session; ca 6 hours of individual supervision. Times to be arranged.

Assessment

1st Attempt: Dissertation (100%), 10,000 to 12,000 words.
Resit: Not normally available at level 4.

Formative Assessment

students have to submit:
- a preliminary bibliogrpahy
- an extended dissertation outline.

Feedback

Feedback from supervisors and course coordionator on non-assessed submissions; continuous feedback from supervisors and course coordinator during supervision meetings; comments and discussion of performance after submission.
