Overview
This course will introduce students to Arabic speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis will be on speaking and listening and particularly on the pronunciation of sounds and symbols unfamiliar to non-native Arabic speakers. Students will first learn to understand and express themselves in basic role play and dialogue and gradually move on to familiarize themselves with written Arabic.
Structure
3 one-hour classes per week; 1 tutorial per week.
Assessment
1st Attempt: Examination (40%). Course work - Language exercises (60%).
Resit: Examination (100%).
Formative Assessment
Course work (60%). 3 formative assessments of different aspects of written Arabic language, plus 1 formative assessment of aural Arabic language, and 1 formative assessment of oral Arabic language.
Feedback
The above assessments are given CAS marks, and written or verbal feedback is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance is also given in both written language classes and oral/aural classes.

Overview
Building on Arabic for Beginners I, students will continue their introduction to Arabic speaking, listening, reading and writing. There will be continued emphasis on pronunciation, speaking and listening and students will learn to understand and express themselves in basic role play and dialogue. Students will also improve their facility with written Arabic and brief reading comprehension passages and translation exercises will be introduced with a focus on intercultural competence.
Structure
3 one-hour classes per week; 1 tutorial per week.
Assessment
1st Attempt: Coursework (60%); Examination (40%).
Formative Assessment
Course work (60%); 3 formative assessments of different aspects of written Arabic language, plus 1 formative assessment of aural Arabiclanguage, and 1 formative assessment of oral Arabic language.
