Notes

This course is not available to students on ERASMUS/SOCRATES exchange. This course will not be available in 2009/10.

Overview

This course looks at the language and skills needed for academic study. The course covers the following core competencies; reading strategies, note-taking skills, essay / report writing, communication and presentation skills.

Structure

1 three-hour tutorial weekly (TCS) Wednesday 2-5 and 1 one-hour tutorial TBA.

Assessment

1st Attempt: Continuous assessment: Exercise (10%); 2 written assignments (20% each); presentation (10%); examination (40%).

Resit: Examination (100%).

Overview

The course provides comprehensive preparation for anyone considering a career in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It consists of a balanced mix of theory and practice on key topics such as Modern English Grammar, Lexis and Phonology, Approaches to Language Learning & Teaching; Language Teaching Methodology; Planning Lessons; Selecting, Adapting & Creating Teaching Materials; Classroom Management; Grammar & Phonology For English Language Teachers and Classroom Teaching Practice.

Structure

A 4 week Distance Learning component followed by an intensive 4 week block delivered on-campus. The face-to-face component of the course consists of the following:

Week 1: Daily input sessions 9am-12pm & 2pm-5pm
Week 2: Input sessions 9am-12pm & peer teaching/teaching practice 2pm-5pm
Week 3: Input sessions 9am-12pm & observed and assessed teaching practice 2pm-5pm
Week 4: Input sessions 9am-12pm & observed and assessed teaching practice 2pm-5pm

Assessment

1st attempt: Continuous assessment based on a portfolio of different oral and written tasks (50%)
