SCE H in German or equivalent. May not be taken in the same half-session together with GM 2041 and/or GM 2043.
Overview
The course consists of the study of selected aspects of modern German culture, involving the close analysis of two modern German texts, together with lectures introducing students to the social, political and cultural context in which the texts were written. The aim of the course is to develop students' vocabulary and knowledge of German and their stylistic awareness, to provide students with the ability to analyse literary works, including film adaptations, and to apply all these skills to the study of modern texts selected for their literary importance and relevance to modern German society. The texts and lectures are complemented by GM 1543. This course may be taken on its own or together with GM 1042.
Structure
1 one-hour lecture and 1 one-hour tutorial per week.
Assessment
1st Attempt: In-course assessment: two 1,500 essays (50%) each).
Resit: 1 two-hour examination (100%).
