Overview

Gravity and isostasy, satellites and geodesy, geomagnetism and palaeomagnetism, geoelectrics, heat flow; techniques of seismology, origin and form of waves, locating earthquakes and deducing their focal mechanisms; using active and passive seismic methods to deduce earth structure, principles for interpreting seismic reflection data; introduction to earth forces, stress and deformation of the solid earth; fluid dynamics, fluid flow, physical sedimentary and volcanic processes. Origin of sedimentary structures.

Structure

3 x 1 hour lecture each week, laboratory visits (on campus) surgery classes.

Assessment

1st Attempt: In-course assessment (20%); examination - 2 hours (80%).

Resit: 2-hour examination.
