Overview

Chemical composition of earth as a planetary body; introduction to geochronology; introduction to phase equilibria; melting processes and magma production; crystallization and consolidation of magma; solid-state reactions in rock materials; metamorphic reactions; diagenesis; composition of minerals and mineral structure; processes and environments of chemical/biological sediment formation.

Structure

2 x one-hour lectures per week, 8 x three-hour practical classes/workshops during half session.

Assessment

1st attempt: examination (60%), in-course assessment (40%).

Resit: examination (60%) plus original in-course assessment (40%).
