Dr D J Smith

Pre-requisites

Overview

Folksong or Fakesang? examines how 'traditional' music, particularly that regarded as Scottish, has been defined and perceived historically and in the present. This course will look at some of the ways in which 'traditional' music has been used for political, non-musical, purposes; discuss interchanges with other countries and cultures; and consider the ways such music is transmitted, recorded, altered and perceived, through time, taste, and commercial, artistic, and aesthetic prejudices.
