Overview
Information skills is a compulsory course which aims to develop and improve the basic skills students may already have in computing and library areas. The course provides a consistent set of skills which are now assumed as essential for effective academic study. Following the course will enable students to acquire a good foundation for the rest of their student career and make the most of the educational experience offered at the University of Aberdeen.
The first element – computing skills – is designed to ensure a student acquires the basic IT skills required by Senate. There are 5 hours of practical workshops in the first week of teaching and a series of exercises which are marked. Students with appropriate skills can pass this on the first day of workshops.
The second element – library skills – is subject/course specific and therefore partly embedded in normal coursework. A tour of the main library is provided in the first teaching week. This is followed by a series of compulsory web-based exercises for each course a student is studying.
The third element – Learning skills – has now been fully embedded in normal courses and the assessment is based on course written work.
Introductory lectures for computing and library skills are given in Freshers’ Week. The course is assessed and the assignments have been flexibly designed to allow students to work through and complete the exercises at a pace dictated by their own prior experience, i.e. students may complete the work in the first week or the final week of assessment. Achieved or Not Achieved will be marked on a student’s record.
Assessed work: (100%).
