Overview
This course will provide students with a comprehensive overview of our natural environment, and of the various kinds of problems associated with it, such as pollution, loss of bio-diversity & wilderness, climate change and resource depletion. It will also consider the various ways human beings have responded to these problems, both in terms of the ethical bases for caring for the environment, and in terms of the social, political, legal, economic and technological constraints and dynamics which frame these responses. It seeks to combine factual information with the values which inform public and private decision making, with a view to grounding an adequate conception of environmental responsibility and global citizenship.
3 one hour lectures and 1 one hour tutorial or workshop per week.
1 two hour written examination (60%) and continuous assessment (40%).
