Course Overview

This course will cover the many cultures which contributed to the establishment of what we call 'England', including Germanic colonisation; engagement with other areas of Britain, the European Continent, Ireland and Scandinavia; Anglo-Norman literature and culture; and how reinterpretations of all these have developed in modern scholarly writing. The course will combine source classes and seminar discussions. Original sources will be read in modern English translation.

Course Description

This course will cover the many cultures which contributed to the establishment of what we call 'England'. Topics will include Germanic colonisation and the resulting linguistic and cultural changes; engagement with north Britain (Scotland), south-western Britain (Wales), the European Continent, Ireland and Scandinavia; Anglo-Norman literature and culture; and how reinterpretations of all these have developed in scholarly writing to the present day. The course will combine source classes and seminar discussions. Students will analyse original sources in e.g. Old Gaelic, Old Norse and Old English; these will be read in modern English translation.
