This course engages students in developing Mandarin Chinese language skills at an advanced level through the study of authentic materials on a wide range of topics including politics, economy, science, technology and cultural and social issues. Taking an integrative approach to language skills development, this 30-credit full-year course consists of four weekly classes, two with a focus on written language skills and two with a focus on spoken language skills.

This advanced Mandarin Chinese language course aims to equip students with language skills for the workplace, be it industrial or academic. Students are also guided in employing advanced language-learning strategies and techniques so that they can further enhance their Chinese language skills beyond university to meet various needs in personal development.
This course runs over the full year and consists of four contact hours per week: two language seminars and two oral classes. The language seminars focus on reading, writing and translation from English into Chinese, with an emphasis on the accuracy and appropriateness in language use. Typical discussions include advanced grammar, nuances between synonyms, idiomatic expressions and language register. The oral classes focus on listening and speaking with an emphasis on how to efficiently extract and express relevant and important information in various contexts, casual and formal.
Authentic materials are used for all the classes covering a wide range of topics including politics, economy, science, technology and cultural and social issues. Whilst improving their language skills, students will also develop a good understanding of culture and society in Chinese-speaking countries and regions.
