This course explores new directions in how we think about humans and other species.
Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in how the social sciences and humanities understand animals, plants, and other organisms. We examine these cutting-edge ideas in depth. We do this by relating classic and recent literature to think through real life encounters and issues, from a walk in the park to things we buy in the shops. Although the focus is on anthropological work, the course should appeal to students from a wide range of backgrounds.

The course is focussed on relations between humans and other creatures, particularly animals and plants. A range of disciplinary approaches will be explored, including history, cultural geography, natural science and science and technology studies, as well as anthropology. The course involves advanced themes in environmental anthropology and will examine research that has emerged during the recent 'more-than-human' trend in the social sciences and humanities. Topics covered include theoretical approaches for bringing non-humans into the social sciences, the Anthropocene and multispecies ethnography, capitalist systems of production, ethics and care, interactions, nature conservation, landscape, infection and disease and the wider implications of a more-than-human anthropology. The course includes outdoor walks and field trips to help students relate the course materials to real world situations and encounters.
