Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:08

Course Overview

This course provides students with an introduction to the sociological imagination as applied to the topic of religion. While the focus is on religion, it uses religion as means of thinking about core sociological concepts and key social processes, as well as the challenges to studying the world sociologically. We will discuss the key dimensions of religious belief, practice and institutions, and what we can learn from these that can be adapted and applied to other kinds of beliefs, practices and institutions.

Course Description

We will learn about religious belief and practice in the contemporary world, considering religious change and secularization, diversity and pluralism. We will look at how beliefs are formed, sustained and changed over time, and the variety of ways in which religion is practiced in a multi-cultural, multi-religious and largely secular society. We will examine the ways that religious beliefs and practices are disputed within and beyond religious communities (for example, about gender and sexuality), as well as the ways people find to get along despite their differences and disagreements. In all the course provides a focused and substantive training in the sociological imagination using religion as a focal point.
