Course Overview

This course provides insight into the business reasons for large software systems such as loyalty card systems, backend systems integrating firms and their suppliers and larges systems that integrate payroll, finance and operational parts of a business. You also learn the entrepreneurial aspects of business during the practical sessions where you explore and develop your own business application idea using service design and lean startup approaches centred around customer development, which you will find useful in any future work. This course is open to anyone across the university and requires no programming experience.

Course Description

This course aims to provide a modern introduction to business computing, centred on the concept of an enterprise data model, as well as the benefits of combining, lean, agile and service design approaches to business product development. Students will learn how to develop enterprise data models, and will gain practical skills in using service design approaches to rapidly design business products as part of the practical work in the course where teams of students will develop start up ideas suitable for web and mobile applications. Supporting infrastructure within the enterprise architecture will be introduced, including networking concepts.

a) an exploration of why businesses need computing systems and the various types of systems such as customer relationship management, supply chain management, OLAP and data warehouse systems
b) exploration of how the data model ties back to the business model and how these relate to the system developed
c) business model ideation, business model canvases, empathy maps and customer journey maps for developing service design
