Course Description

This course is about business strategy and covers a broad range of topics that come under the general heading of “Business Strategy” or “Strategic Management”. Strategy is a fundamental part of every business, its origins can be traced back to the 5th century (BC) as part of the art of war, however, it is more common today to hear of strategy in terms of professional language, both personal and professional. Organisations consistently struggle to find the best strategy to be successful with some companies, e.g., IKEA, adopting a long-term strategy with a clear plan over a relatively long period of time. Other organisations, e.g., Apple have been far more flexible in their strategic approach.

The course has been designed to help you gain a holistic understanding of the key areas of strategic management including how strategy is formulated and implemented, and what tools and models can be used to support strategic decision making. In this course, you will explore the difference between corporate, business, and functional strategy, the complex issues associated with the implementation of strategy, the concept of strategic fit, and the role for strategic leadership in shaping and implementing strategy.

This module will enable you to develop skills such as organisational research, analysis, and evaluation of information to produce a cohesive synthesis in a report format which is expected of graduates by employers. Use of digital resources is increasingly important today and, even more important, is ensuring that the information you access, and use is truthful, using comprehensive and rigorous databases from trusted sources is an important part of your research as well as understanding and applying the information to produce a credible organisational report based on real-world organisations with recommendations for future strategy.

This module and its assessment will push you to continue to develop your research, analytical and academic writing skills, asking you to make creative solutions. Your tutors are there to support you and encourage you to achieve the highest possible outcomes, nothing is guaranteed but your hard work and resilience will enable you to understand formative feedback and develop your work for the best results.
