Course Overview

This introductory course aims to build student confidence. Its provides students with relevant competencies and skills in the use of English for academic purposes (ie to prepare for the rigours of academic scholarship), to critically engage with reading, listening, presenting and writing content to then to be able to demonstrate competency of knowledge and skills acquired from this and other Year 1, Semester 1 (L1/S1) courses.

Course Description

The course focuses on the development of a range of skills in the use of English for Academic Purposes through a structured approach. Emphasis will be given to:

  1. Listening skills (note taking/identifying main and supporting points/ listening for salient details)
  2. Speaking skills (participating in discussion and debate)
  3. Reading skills (understanding main ideas/reading for academic purposes/text analysis/identifying the writer’s standpoint)
  4. Writing skills (planning and drafting/essay structure/summarising/paraphrasing/describing, comparing and contrasting)
