Course Description

This electronic music composition course focuses on electronic music that lives both in academic and commercial music scenes. Using current music and sound hardware and software that the music department’s electronic music studio offers, the students will develop compositional and live performance skills. Specifically, the students will create a portfolio of electronic compositions in different style and work with a small group to develop and perform a live set based on the skill set and compositional strategies that the course encourages them to establish.

After the successful completion of the course, the students will:

  • Be able to have a practical knowledge and understanding of electronic music making;
  • Be able to listen and perform electronic music with a critical, culturally- and genre-informed perspective on the practice;
  • Be able to create and perform live electronic music as a group using prepared sound materials and/or through live coding techniques; and
  • Be able to have a comprehensive understanding of electronic music hardware and software that is required for them to continue working as a successful electronic musician.
