Jurisprudence is a course in legal theory. The course looks into three major theoretical traditions that shaped legal thinking (especially in the 20th century): legal positivism, the natural law doctrine, and pragmatism. It is designed to help students develop a self-conscious and reflective attitude to some of the hotly contested issues of modern law. The course specifically focuses on conceptual issues related to the concept of law, the nature of lega normativity, and the relationship between law and morality.

The course provides a historical overview of the developments that led to the emergence of contemporary (mainstream) legal theoretical discourses. The course material is organised around five themes: (1) the emergence of and development of legal positivism (Bentham, Austin, Kelsen); (2) setting the agenda for contemporary legal theory (Hart, Dworkin); (3) contemporary positivist dilemmas (Raz, methodological and normative positivism, Waldron); (4) the possibilities of a naturalist alternative (classical and modern naturalism, Fuller, Finnis); (5) the search for a pragmatist alternative ( legal realism, the economic analysis of law).
