Course Overview

How do we get from Beowulf to ‘bae’? From Chaucer to ‘sashay away’? This course will look at the development of English over the last millennium and beyond, examining language changes in sound, structure and meaning. You will also be introduced to present-day study of English, its spread as a truly global language, and how all of this can add to our understanding of language in the modern world and in the past.

Course Description

How do we get from Beowulf to ‘bae’? From Chaucer to ‘sashay away’? This course will look at the development of English over the last millennium and beyond, examining language changes in sound, structure and meaning. You will also be introduced to present-day study of English, its spread as a truly global language, and how all of this can add to our understanding of language in the modern world and in the past. 

By taking this course, students will:

  • build knowledge of the important structural changes English has undergone in the last millennium
  • gain understanding of the techniques used in investigation of historical language change
  • be supported to evaluate the extent to which certain influences have shaped the English language

learn how to able to apply their own experiences with the English language to wider contexts, in order to reflect upon the status of the language in society.
