Learn more about German 20th-century literature, dealing with the events that shaped German and European history. As in all good literature, we will discuss universal themes and topics covering all of the most important aspects of modern life.

Course Description

The course consists of the study of selected aspects of modern German culture, involving the close analysis of a modern German text, together with lectures introducing students to the social, political and cultural context in which the text was written. The aim of the course is to develop students’ vocabulary and knowledge of German and their stylistic awareness, to provide students with the ability to analyse literary works, including film adaptations, and to apply all these skills to the study of modern texts selected for their literary importance and relevance to modern German society. This course may be taken on its own or together with GM 1050.
