Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with a better understanding of contemporary French politics and society. It will focus on some of the key tensions and controversies that have shaped French politics and society from the 1980s until the present day. Through a series of case-studies focusing on Islamophobia, secularism, the legacies of transatlantic slavery, feminisms, regional identities and gender and sexuality in contemporary France, students will gain an advanced understanding of debates around equality and the recognition of difference within French political culture. The initial part of the course deals with the theoretical debates about difference in France. The rest of the course will focus on specific struggles for recognition that have arisen over the last forty years.
