Course Description

This course is intended to provide students with a broad overview of the cultural, political and historical context of twentieth and early twenty first century French and Francophone society. Following an introduction to the socio-historical and socio-political context, discussion will be structured around a range of texts which explore key points that have shaped modern France.

The course will explore the ‘dark days’ of the occupation of France by Nazi forces during World War II, considering the literary output at the time, and the complex questions of resistance and collaboration which have framed the evolution of the national response to that experience over the intervening decades. The course will move on to consider some of the legacies of World War II, beginning with exploration of the progress in women’s rights and the development of gender issues in a French context.

The end of World War II marked the beginning of the decline of the overseas colonial empires of the major European powers. The course will explore the impact of colonialism, with particular reference to the concept of cultural assimilation, and will consider the aftermath of the French Empire and decolonisation in the complex relationship between France and the former colonies, touching on the development of the Francophone world and the position of French as an official language in 27 countries across all continents.

On this course, students will engage with a wide range of texts and genres, including literature, film, authentic writing from the relevant periods, as well as visual materials, in order to understand the historical and political context and the ways in which contemporary French and Francophone society and culture have been shaped by the legacies of World War II, colonialism and decolonisation. Texts will be available in translation for those with limited or no knowledge of French.
