Course Overview

This course aims to provide students with opportunities to develop a broad and integrated knowledge of Social Studies in the primary school curriculum. Students will explore research informed approaches to teaching and learning Social Studies in the primary school, and consider the implications of these approaches for classroom practice.  Students will also develop a critical understanding of how the local environment and community can support children’s learning.

Course Description

In this course students will explore the 3 organisers within the curricular area Social Studies:

  • People, past events and societies
  • People, place and environment
  • People in society, economy and business

Students will explore theories such as the Spiral Curriculum to learn about planning for progression.  There will also be an emphasis on using the local environment and community to support learning.  Students will gain experience of planning for outdoor learning, risk assessment and organization of field trips.
