Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:10

Course Overview

This course aims to challenge the idea of ‘normative’ child development to provide students with a strong foundation from which to inform thinking in terms of inclusion of all learners and from which to build subsequent knowledge and understanding of learning and teaching.   Students will explore the emotional world of the child through broad study of child development and detailed study of emotional and social development.  The course will explore the students’ understanding of the concept of childhood.

Course Description

  • Completion of this course will include visits or a ‘placement’ (self organised) in an early years setting (such as playgroup or day care) to observe how young children develop and learn. There will be study tasks to complete during placement. The placement will be for a maximum requirement of 6 days/40 hours.
  • Students will explore the question ‘what is a child/childhood?’ which will be a central question that students use to challenge and reflect on their thinking throughout the course.
  •  Students will document their (changing) ideas and consider how relationships affect learning; the importance of experiential embodied learning and the impact of the environment (socio-cultural/natural context) including the learning environment.  This will include a particular focus on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and the long-term impact of these.  The course will provide a strong basis for student to further develop their thinking in terms of inclusion and particularly supporting children with ASN.
