Course Description

The MChem group practical provides group-working experience focused on a fast-moving research environment. Students are responsible for managing their own activities focussed towards the delivery of distinct project outcomes.  The course provides experience in teamwork, experiment planning, data recording and communication for a small group of students. A group of up to five students is assigned to a particular research project, which is overseen by two supervisors. The overall project is then subdivided into smaller ‘mini’ projects and tasks for the individual students. The students, aided by the supervisor team, must develop protocols for the recording, sharing and analysis of their data and the interpretation of results.

The students, in consultation with the supervisors, will develop a project plan, where the overall aims of the project and the objectives of the individual students are established. The supervisors will meet with the students at least every two weeks to discuss progress and coordinate group-work activities, including sharing experimental results, scheduling instrument time or demonstration of new research techniques or discussing appropriate research papers. Students should discuss successes and problems with reference to the initial project planning report, as a group and with the supervisors.
