Course Description

This course consists of an independent research project that is supervised by an academic member of staff. The course allows you to demonstrate independent critical thinking and practical scientific ability by bringing together all academic skills taught throughout your undergraduate studies. You are expected to identify and assimilate background literature in your field of study, develop research questions, objectives and experimental design, carry out data collection and data analysis, and communicate research findings by writing a thesis in the style of a research paper.

You will receive continuous guidance through regular progress meetings with your supervisor and through a series of timetabled workshops and tutorials that allow the whole student cohort to share their journey and discuss professional development.

The course is structured into three phases: project planning, project execution and project write-up. Each phase is completed with a summative assessment that makes up the final course grade:

10%: Project Research Plan

10%: Project Performance Assessment

80%: Written Thesis
