The course will introduce students to several key texts from Spain. It will also introduce a key question in contemporary literary and film analysis: how texts may reinforce or challenge the social structures that underlie local and national communities. To this end we will study plays, novels and films that have had a broad impact in the Spanish-speaking world and beyond, investigating how they work to cement the cultural values that bring communities together or, on the contrary, lead readers to question and rebel against prevailing social norms.

Spanish-speaking cultures are often thought of as having tight-knit and sociable communities, particularly when compared to the Northern European norm. However, all communities are run through with tensions and conflicting points of view about what brings them together or divides them.
In this course we will ask what makes a community at different levels: families, friendship groups and neighbourhoods; villages, towns and cities; regions and nations. We will study how communities have been constructed or challenged in Spanish literature and film from different time periods. We will focus on iconic figures from these texts: insiders and outsiders, conformists and rebels, conservatives and revolutionaries, pragmatists and dreamers. All these individuals have particular ways of engaging with or contesting the communities that have shaped them.
