Course Description

From the Black Lives Matter movement to the ‘migrant crisis’ in the Mediterranean and even the increasing prevalence of cultural ‘blackfishing’, race and ethnicity are increasingly important – and controversial – topics. This course takes a global approach, focusing on key debates and perspectives in race and ethnicity and providing deeper insight into the social, economic, and cultural structures which shape our everyday interactions and understandings of race and ethnicity. Students may study topics including race and protest movements (e.g., The Black Panthers, The Zapatistas), misogynoir in the beauty industry, the racialisation of refugees and migrants, the relationship between race and Anglocentrism, and literatures around Afro-Futurism and black utopias, as well as broader concepts such as cosmopolitanism, nationalism, xenophobia, and citizenship.

The course takes a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach and emphasises the historical, cultural, social, and political processes through which race and ethnicity are ‘made’ and experienced. Ultimately students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of race and ethnicity, both on a structural and global level and in terms of the personal, the everyday, and identity.
